Setre Naramachi | Introducing the Hotels of Nara

I would like to introduce a hotel opened in December, 2018. It’s located next to Kohfukuji Temple, one of the World Heritage sites of Nara, and a location great for sightseeing in Nara.

The concept of this hotel is “providing a relaxed atmosphere where you can feel the 1300-year history of the ancient capital of Nara, along with the natural warmth of trees.”

This architecture is clean and modern, and uses wood and other materials from Nara all around the hotel. Using Yoshino cedar, Yoshino cypress, and Tsukigase dirt, this architecture has incorporated these materials that have been produced over a long period of time, and the traditional techniques that come with them. There is lots of original furniture that use the wood of Yoshino. As this hotel uses so much natural material, it is an incredibly therapeutic space that lets us feel like we are walking through a forest.

There are some comfortable spaces such as a lounge where hotel guests can have a snack and drink, and a library where you enjoy books related to Nara chosen by a book sommelier listening to the record music. There is also a rooftop terrace where you can take in the fresh air and enjoy the stars in the sky.

Their guest rooms are mainly twin bedrooms. In addition to an ordinary twin bedroom, there are also twin bedrooms with a Japanese tatami space. Have a good sleep in rooms used Yoshino woods.

While of course using Yamato vegetables and Yamato Red Beef only from Nara, the chef combines these local flavors with seasonal ingredients from many other locations of the Setre Group to provide new, wonderful flavors.

Shojin-style cuisine is a vegetable-centered Japanese cuisine that was originally for monks meals at temple. This Shojin cuisine is arranged into a French course, using Yamato vegetable.

With the unique culture and cultivation methods of Nara that are being passed along to the future, Yamato vegetables have unique shapes, flavors, and scents. Since it does not use any animal fats, it’s ideal for digestion and kind to the body.

Activities

During your stay, you can enjoy some original activities provided by the hotel to make your trip to Nara all the more fulfilling.

For example, a morning walk in Nara. While hearing stories that you won’t find on a tourist map, you can experience a mysterious yet relaxing morning in Nara. You might meet some deer early in the morning at on the grounds of Todai-ji Temple and Kohfuku-ji Temple, or Ukimi-do! It is held every day and free for guests at the hotel. It starts at 7 a.m. and lasts about an hour. However, it is only guided in Japanese.

Another interesting program is a sutra-copying experience program. Have you ever used a brush to write characters in ink? Nara has many things related to “shodo”, Japanese calligraphy. How about experiencing copying Buddhist sutras onto handmade Japanese paper made by a craftsman, in a traditional room with hand-sewn tatami mats, using a brush and ink made in Nara? It is a time to quiet the mind and have a dialogue with yourself. Guests at the hotel can participate for free.
