Temple lodgings at Mount Shigi

The whole mountain is a sanctuary, and like Mont Saint-Michel in France, once you step inside the area, you are in a different world.

After getting out of the car, the temple lodgings is located at the end of a cobblestone road that cars cannot enter.
The cobblestone path branches off and is like a maze and the paths are lit by lanterns at night, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Only guests are privileged to see these lanterns.
When you arrive at the temple lodgings, a monk will show you around.
Even though it is called a “shukubo” – which is a lodging for pilgrims – there is wifi and,
guests can also choose between Shojin (vegetarian) and  Kaiseki (multi-course) cuisine, ensuring a comfortable stay.
At night, you can walk around the temple grounds under the lanterns.
In the early morning, while it is still dark, embark on a spiritual journey with the morning Goma fire ritual at the lodging, followed by a walk to the main hall where you can witness the breathtaking sunrise.

Guests can also participate in the temple’s prayer ritual, adding a spiritual touch to the stay.
In the main hall, you can also have the special experience of walking step by step along the wall in total darkness.

On the way there, you pass through such total darkness that you cannot tell whether your eyes are open or closed, and when you see the light and step outside you realise how grateful you are for the light and the sun…
