Western-style art and architecture at a Takabatake Salon garden cafe in Nara
2025/06/04
Takabatake Salon (たかばたけ茶論) is a charming garden café in the historic Takabatake district of Nara. Situated adjacent to the former residence of renowned novelist Naoya Shiga, the café occupies a Western-style building constructed in 1919 by painter Genichiro Adachi.
This building, inspired by the architecture of Provence in southern France, has been designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, for its historical and cultural value.
The café was established in 1980 by Western-style painter Kazuo Nakamura and his wife, Kikuko, who opened their garden to the public. Visitors can enjoy coffee made from locally roasted beans and handmade cakes crafted with seasonal fruits.
The serene garden setting, featuring a terrace shaded by a century-old Himalayan cedar tree, offers a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of the Taisho and Showa eras.
