Gelatoria Fiore is located by Shinyakushiji Temple in the Takabatake-cho area of Nara. It is a quiet part of the city, only 30 minutes walk from the city center, and close to the edge of Kasuga Primeval Forest it feels almost like a small village. This is the part of Nara that was once filled with priestly residences, and today is filled with old, traditional homes, some of them distinguished by the region’s characteristic low, curving, yellow earthen walls. Gelatoria Fiore serves hand-made gelato in a variety of unusual flavours, as well as pasta and stone-oven baked pizza.
The gelato is served in antique glasses, and the store is filled with pretty furniture and masses of dried flowers in arrangements, bouquets, and chandelier formations. It is a beautiful cafe, and well worth a visit, especially if you are also going to novelist Shiga Naoya’s old residence, Shinyakushiji Temple, or the Irie Taikichi photography museum (Nara City Museum of Photography) – all within walking distance.
