Modern Times Japan: The Bar at Nara Hotel

2025/08/12

Visitors to Nara are invariably in search of ancient history, found in the Great Buddha, legends surrounding the deer of Nara Park, and its numerous old temples housing early Buddhist art. But Nara has a modern history too, and one of the best representatives of the era of modernisation in Japan is The Bar at Nara Hotel. In fact, a wander round (or stay in) the hotel itself is a dreamy – and dream-like –  experience for those who love the Anglo-inspired interiors of the Meiji period. Another great example of this in Nara is the room where treaties between Japan and the US were ratified in 1951 preserved at Shisui hotel.

The aesthetics are perfectly preserved at Nara Hotel Bar, which is stylish Meiji era bar dating to 1909.  It is the perfect spot for an intimate conversation or after dinner nightcap, and the charm even extends to the bartenders who have old-fashioned charm and offer  impeccable service. There is also a tea room just off the main bar area which is open all day, with views over the gardens towards Mt Wakakusa. Another attraction is the Salon next door, where a  piano once played by Albert Einstein stands in the corner.
